As I did the readings for the week, I did a lot of pondering about Americas on Civil War. The Haitian Revolutionary War and America’s Civil War were similar yet very different. Not only did the two wars made me think a lot but the relationships between the slaves and owners were interesting. There are many different differences between the two wars. From the knowledge I have of difference between the two wars are the slave-slave owner relationships, the uprisings, and the relationship between the free and enslaved blacks.
One of the differences between the two wars are the slave- slave owner relationship. In America it was considered taboo for a slave owner to carry on a romantic relationship with a black slave. Although it was known that many of the owners would “procreate” with the slaves for business purposes, it was not publicly discussed and it was kept quiet. In Haiti, a lot of the slave owners would prefer to be in an open relationship with freed black women. I just found it amazing that slaves owners in Haiti would marry and sometimes leave there fortune for their black spouses; While in America, it was considered forbidden.
The uprisings between the American and Haitian Slaves were different. The main difference between the two uprisings is the nobility. Uprisings that occurred by American slaves weren’t notably recognized and we definitely do not discuss it in history classes. In our history classes, we discussed how American slaves were usually “loyal” and “peaceful” unless they were punished for escaping.

The relationship between the freed and enslaved blacks was different also. In America, usually the freed blacks would try all they could to help and advocate for the enslaved blacks. They usually didn’t fight against  each other but yet helped one another. As I was reading I was thinking about all the differences and wondered did anyone else think about the difference between the two countries.
