Well I cant exactly write a perfectly executed entry since I wasn't in class Tuesday and haven't gotten the notes from a friend.
But I would like to branch off of what Cynthia has posted pertaining to "Code Noir" which is what I am guessing lecture was about Tuesday.
From my understanding of this, Code Nior helped slaves, which for the time period is very surprising. If you go to Browns Library online, a short and easy to understand description of the codes are there, saying, "...the Code Noir legalized manumission and prohibited the torture and mutilation of slaves by other than royal authority. It also granted freed persons the same rights and privileges as those enjoyed by whites. Predictably, these protections fell afoul of the planters and their representatives."
I mean throughout all of school when learning about slavery, we kept seeing images like this...
I have taken 3 history classes pertaining to the history of slavery and labor and I have never once heard of the "Code Nior" which was put in place to protect slaves. I feel as though we need to be focusing on these fact too along with the more gruesome part of history so we can see the good and the bad.
