There is an African proverb that says "Until the lion has a storyteller, the tale of the hunt till always glorify the hunter" this statement is the lens through which I view all history as told by the Western storyteller. As I read American history books I always ask the question "what would the lion say?" Therefore I was never inclined to believe the story of Columbus as told by most American texts that we are provided in school. When it comes to stories on conquest the history books always seem to oversimplify the humanity of the minority and overemphasize the sanctimonious reasoning of the majority. It seems that somehow American history always finds a way to justify the terror that it imposes on others. So in light of the points made about history, historicity and understanding the importance of knowing what the writers have at stake when reading history, I came up with a poem to express my feelings about historical education in the West. Though the rhyme scheme may be difficult to detect through simply reading, I think my sentiments will be most accurately expressed through prose.
Mental digression
Philosophical depression
resulting from the repression
of my individual thought progression
they call it education
this indoctrination
through information
is really systematic adaptation
of someone else's attempt to glorify the west
who refuse to confess
to the effects of their duress
but it matters nonetheless
because you cannot rationalize genocide
or use differing customs to justify ethnocide
who are you to decide
that human value is based on where you reside
hinting at lacking civilization
or Christianization
as somehow valid justification
for extermination
it begins to appear that the writers are delirious
because the human in me finds it eerily insidious
to justify mass murder of natives by immigrants
as if claiming you are heaven sent makes holocaust legitimate
there is no case no argument no claim
to justify mass murder not even in JESUS name
such lies are why I have a hard time trusting
those to which I'm suppose to be entrusting
the responsibility of my education
when western supremacy is the writer's motivation
This poem is just awesome! Thanks Quinisha!
