In class we watched a documentary called "Life and Debt" that showed us what Jamaica is like to locals vs tourists. The documentary showed us what Jamaica has become as a country independently. The country does not have enough funds or agriculture to be able to sustain itself as it had planned, leaving itself in debt. This leads me to some of the writing that we have gotten to read.
In the PDF File Needed But Unwanted by Bridget Wooding. It is like many of the texts that we have read in class. It gives us a closer look into the sugar plantations along with Haitian-Dominican relations. This also includes the immigration and migration of workers to the agricultural land.
While these countries have been around for a while, there is still great obstacles to overcome that locals are facing. In Needed But Unwanted, Wooding writes that, "This said, political reform in the Dominican Republic is an extremely complex and slow process, and there could be setbacks if the Dominican
political and economic crisis of 2003 deepens and endures. Reformers still face a long and difficult battle." (pg 89).
While these countries are still facing change, change is an inevitable thing of the future.
