Why visit and live in place populated by people you can't stand

According to Jamaica Kincaid, "A tourist is an ugly human being." That is a quote I pondered on throughout the book. I honestly do not understand the meaning of her saying this. Well, I understand what Jamaica Kincaid is saying about tourist and I understand why Antiguans are frustrated by tourist. However, I oppose, a little, to the statement. I am little biased towards it. Antigua is a beautiful country with a rich history. What is wrong with a person wanting to experience the country?
Jamaica Kincaid said the Antiguans cannot stand tourist. I understand that a lot of tourist come into the country, naïve and ignorant of the history, and take advantage of the country’s good. But in “tourists” defense, tourist is such a broad term. Not all “tourists” are ignorant to their history. Some tourists really want to learn about the country. I don’t understand categorizing all tourists as stupid, empty, and ugly. In No Telephone to Heaven Jamaicans express their dislike towards tourists. On some level, I understand their anger. But once again “tourists” is a much generalized term.
I love how Jamaica Kincaid talks about people (Europeans, Americans, East Indians) living in Antigua who dislike Antiguans. Who do not like to communicate or associate with them, although they decided to move to a heavily black populated area. That is just plain stupid and that is something that no one will understand.
