No Telephone To Heaven

It's very interesting to me how the book is titled No Telephone to Heaven.  There seem to be underlying messages throughout the book which involve the title of the book.  The first metaphor that I noticed first that seemed to have a relationship to the title of the book was in Chapter 2 when it is clear that Christianity is a central component of the people in Jamaica.  I also noticed that it seems that the Jamaican people almost feel betrayed and forgotten by God because of their low positions in society and dreadful way of living.  When the book mentions that "No telephone to Heaven" is painted on the sides of the truck in which all the light and dark skinned people are riding in, I couldn't help but see a connection there.  These people feel helpless and forgotten by God.  They feel that there is no point in "talking" to God because he can't or won't do anything to fix their situations and I believe that this very reason is why the previous owners of the land had this phrase "no telephone to Heaven" painted on the sides of their trucks.

Another instance that I noticed the title No Telephone to Heaven having a metaphoric relationship with the text in the book was when the author finally informed us in the dialogue that Christopher killed Paul and his family during Christmas time.  This specific incident has a connection to the title because Christopher seems to be taking revenge on Charles and his whole family for the fact that his grandmother died and he is all alone and that God has not been there to help him when he needed help the most so now he has to live a life of suffering.  The book says that the family is in a deep sleep which is described as "the sleep of the righteous" which is also strange because maybe this also has a connection to the title and how they are sleeping so peacefully but Christopher never gets to experience "the sleep of the righteous" and so he also takes revenge on the family because of that reason too.
