When reading The Farming of Bones and throughout our discussion on Tuesday, I couldn't help but want to look deeper into the symbolism in the novel.
- We discussed the importance of the 'water' in class. Different bodies of water and scenarios involving water were present in the book. This could be representative of the 'cleansing' or 'rebirth' of the characters throughout.
- Another piece of symbolism being Anabelle's dreams and her ability to 'open up' in them. My parents always told me I like to sleep a lot because the dreamer is the real me. Yours dreams are subconscious and uncontrollable, possibly representative of how you wish life was or could be.
- The name The Farming of Bones is symbolic as well. The novel itself is a compilation of different stories from Haitian slaves and workers and the hardships they endured. The 'farming' of 'bones' can be seen as the labor intensive work the plantation, or farm, workers were made to do.
