When reading No Telephone to Heaven, and through the struggling of identity Clare goes through, I couldn't help but think about our discussion last week we had when I asked the class in general if African Americans were discriminated against within their own community. I was shocked and intrigued at the responses given, not only were the answers across the board yes, but I was also shocked to understand the referencing to being 'a white girl' with given circumstances. I was completely ignorant to that concept prior to that particular discussion, but definitely intrigued. Clare goes through a certain similar identity struggle as far as her nationality, race, culture, and social standing goes throughout the novel.
